Bwthyn Afon (River Cottage)

Bwthyn Afon, meaning River Cottage underwent extensive renovation in 2013, whilst retaining original character features such as the impressive inglenook fireplace with a multi fuel stove set on a raised slate hearth, and exposed beams in the lounge area, and reproduction paneling on the open staircase. The kitchen area is well equipped and modern in styling with spotlighting, whilst retaining a country cottage look and feel to it.

Bwthyn Afon exudes a warm friendly welcome, along with providing cosy, comfortable accommodation to an extremely high standard throughout. Situated in a quiet terrace in the village of Tanygrisiau, meaning ‘Under the Steps’, The cottage is away from the main thoroughfare, and with no passing traffic makes it a ‘perfect getaway from it all’ location & only a few minutes walk away from the Ffestiniog narrow gauge steam railway station in Tanygrisiau.

The cottage stands amongst some dramatic scenery and enjoys views of countryside & hillside encompassing the Manod mountains at the front with a craggy backdrop of the Moelwyn mountains which protect the village from much of the wind from northerly gales in the winter and give the village a pleasant southerly aspect with relatively mild weather considering how high it’s located in Snowdonia.

The slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog is only 1.5 miles away and offers an array of eating establishments, pubs, shops, chemist, garage & leisure centre/swimming pool. Blaenau Ffestiniog is also the home to the World Famous Ffestiniog Narrow Gauge Steam railway which links to the harbour town of Porthmadog.

Bwthyn Afon really is the ideal base for exploring the many attractions Snowdonia has to offer. The Italianate village of Portmeirion is only 8 miles away, Llechwedd Slate Caverns, ZipWorld Titan and Bounce Below only 1.5 miles, many CADW heritage sites and beaches being only a short 20 or 30 minute drive away. Coed y Brenin, one of the best mountain bike centres in Britain is only 12 miles away and of course, there is Snowdon itself, which is about a 30 minute drive.
